Suiseki (miniature mountain in or on a dai (bowl or foot)) have been found in Japan and China for hundreds of years and have traditionally remained in the family.
Also called Scholar rock, the Suiseki first emerged during the Tang Dynasty (618-906) and were common in Chinese history in the spiritual or praying spaces of rulers and intellectuals. With the increasing influence of Daoism, the aristocrats and educated elites of the time began to gain more appreciation for the natural world and landscape art in all forms they had. Large gardens sprang up all over China and Japan, both a representation of wealth and a source of inspiration. Literati often built their studios within these gardens, in which they kept personal objects for artistic, meditative or decorative purposes at home. Such an object, the rock of the scholar, was seen as a microcosm of the universe.
The Suiseki must of course be shaped, so it must not be cut or chiselled to change the shape, this Suiseki is therefore not worked, but has its original shape, including the bottom that rests in or on the Dai.

These miniature objects were be loved for their ability to capture the essence of nature, especially Qi the universal energy of things. The value of rocks was based on four essential properties: thinness, openness and perforations and wrinkels. These features were rooted in the rock's resemblance to nature. While most of these rocks were made of limestone or quartz, some were fosillized wood, which was considered a rarer stone. The natural Suiseki rocks / stones are the result of natural water erosion or calcification. While it was claimed to be natural, many of the rocks were improved through minor polishing and sanding, which traditionally was not intended. The beauty and uniqueness of these stones is unparalleled.

Long; 34,0 cm = 39,0 cm
High ; 11,1 cm = 12.0 cm
Wide; 9,5 cm = 12,5 cm
